Day 1

After collection from your hotel in the Old Quarter, experience the drive to Ha Long city through the small country towns and lush farmlands of the Red River Delta. Welcome aboard the Halong Ginger and begin your cruise towards the awaiting wonders of the Bay of Descending Dragons. Following the cruise briefing is a sumptuous buffet lunch, freshly prepared and served by your cruise chef. Meanwhile the ship begins its journey into the mythical landscape of Halong bay, believed by the Vietnamese to have been shaped as an ancient dragon made its descent into the sea. The roughly hewn hunks of limestone scattered throughout the bay pierce the sky like dragon's teeth, the ocean its long velvety tongue. You will pass Oan Lagoon, Mat Quy (Monster) and Am Tich (Teapot) islets before visiting the mysterious and beautiful Tien Ong cave. The cave is huge, measuring approximately 2000 m2, dripping with glistening stone stalactites. Following your exploration of the cave shall be a visit by traditional row boat to Cua Van, one of Halong bay's famed floating villages, entire communities creating a life for themselves between the twin spheres of sea and skies. At 17h00 the cruise continues to the overnight anchorage area while you have the option of learning more about the wonders of Vietnamese cooking at the onboard cooking demonstration by the vivacious cruise chef. Cooking never fails to work up an appetite, so at 19h00 a dinner to delight the senses is served in the dining area. Following dinner you have the option of trying your hand at squid fishing or making the most of happy hour at the bar.

Day 2

Rise bright and early at 6h30 to watch as the limestone karsts are painted all the colors of a Vietnamese sunrise before a revitalizing Tai Chi class on the terrace deck at 7h00. Refresh yourself with a morning dip in the silken green waters before a light breakfast of pastries, fresh breads and your choice of tea or coffee at the dining room. By tender you will be escorted to a picturesque sandy beach, where you will also have the opportunity to climb to a brilliant view of the bay. Return to the cruise around 9h00 to enjoy a last hot shower before checking out of your cabin and settling any outstanding bills. At 11h00 a hearty brunch is served in the dining room as the cruise begins its return to the mainland. Disembark the cruise and await your return transfer to Hanoi.

Day 2

For those who can summon themselves from bed in time for sunrise, you have the opportunity to view the sun peeling apart a grey dawn with tapering golden fingers. Today, all 3 day 2 night guests of Ginger and her sister ships the Jasmine and the Violet will embark on our day boat - the Sunset. The Sunset will take you to Viet Hai dock for a leisurely cycle along the winding rustic paths to Viet Hai village, nestled in the dark green heart of Cat Ba National Park. Here you can trek deeper into the tangled jungle or explore the village for a taste of local life before beginning the ride back to the dock.

As the boat makes its way to the Ho Ba Ham area you will be served a delicious lunch, well-earned after the morning's exercise. Once you have arrived at Ho Ba Ham follow your expert guide by kayak as you navigate the fishing villages, beaches, lagoons and natural archways of the surrounding area. The crystal clear waters also make for excellent swimming, and for the thrill chasers of the cruise, you can try a jump from top deck to the ocean.. if you dare!

Please note that for the Sunset to reach Viet Hai dock it must cross open water, meaning that this option depends largely on favorable weather conditions. Should waves prove too strong on the day of your cruise then the Sunset will instead take you to directly to Cat Ba Island, famous for its vibrant greenery and lush forest. Here you can kayak and swim at the secluded Hai Quan lagoon, a little known area of entrancing beauty. Lunch will be served on your way to Surprise Cave area, where you can elect either to explore vast caverns filled with glistening limestone spun like melted sugar, or else kayak through the dark and compelling Luon cave. In the evening Sunset will take you back to the overnight boat, meanwhile passing some of Halong bay's iconic areas.

we opted for the 3 day and 2 night cruise and we are really glad of our choice. we had a cabin at the front of the ginger. our cabin was well appointed with a double bed, very comfortable. the cruise was on calm waters and although we were not in the "high season" the weather for 2.5 days of our cruise was near perfect. the itinerary included, kayaking, swimming and with a little visit to a cave. the information about the history of halong bay, including its traditional mythical as well as its modern history gave us a clear picture of it all. the crew were very informative. after a typical day of relaxing, sunning, exploring, swimming and enjoying the bay and its islands most opted for a shower and then up to the top deck for a drink as well we were treated to a vietnamese spring roll cooking class, ala pre dinner snack, a couple more drinks and it was down to the restaurant for yet another gourmet feast, did i mention how good the food was ? it was great. included on day two was a trip to cat ba island, riding pillion for a 15 minute trip to one of the islands villages, again informative on the lifestyle of those living on the island, it was also fun. we happily recommend this great halong bay cruise.
